About Your Instructor:

Cheri began studying the art of Raqs Sharqi in 2007 with Ajsa Samia and later joined her performance group, Palace of the Winds. From 2011 to 2012, she trained at the Los Angeles Bellydance Academy and with teachers from the Adam Basma Dance Academy. Over the years, she has also participated in workshops with numerous local and international
instructors, exploring a wide range of Raqs Sharqi styles.

She completed Ajsa Samia’s beginner to advanced level teacher training courses and has taught classes across these levels at different times over the years.

Cheri has performed at festivals in Europe, the United States, and across several provinces in South Africa, and has previously worked as an in-house dancer at restaurants in Cape Town. She actively supports community initiatives by performing at fundraising events.

For Cheri, dance is an extension of her work as a women’s rights lawyer who is committed to social justice and community engagement. She values the ways in which Raqs Sharqi fosters confidence in women and other groups of people impacted by disadvantage and marginalisation; how it strengthens mental and physical well-being, and builds
community connections.

In June this year Cheri placed 1st in the South African Dance Forum Western Cape Coastal Super Series Dancesport Championships Over35 category.

Her favourite styles are folkloric and Shaabi!
